Advanced Placement Visual Art
Currently Columbia High School offers two AP visual art course offerings - AP 2d Art and Design and AP Drawing.
The AP visual art courses seeks highly motivated students who are interested in the study of art and design. AP course requirements are rigorous, and students should demonstrate a high level of commitment when enrolled. During the year students will work to produce a portfolio in accordance with College Board standards. This course emphasizes making art as an ongoing process, where students are expected to make creative and critical decisions throughout the portfolio process. As students create their portfolios, they will demonstrate understanding of art and design principles through their development of materials, processes, and ideas over the school year. The AP Studio Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year.

The AP Portfolio
For the AP portfolio, students choose one topic of theme to study throughout their 15 art works.
The AP portfolio consists of two sections: Sustained Investigations and Selected Works Sustained Investigations are a series of 10 works in which students present evidence of the experimentation, investigation, and revision of their artwork. Students will sketchbook, process, and final images as well as written statements to document their sustained investigation. The second portion of the portfolio is the selected works portion. The student will choose 5 of their best works from their sustained investigation or create an additional 5 works that highlight their technical and creative abilities. The AP pre-portfolio is a prerequisite required of all students interested in enrolling the AP 2d Art and Design or AP Drawing course. The AP pre-portfolio is designed to provide students with an brief AP portfolio experience - completing it requires the student to present the necessary technical and linguistic skills required of AP art students, as well as provides them an opportunity to receive feedback on their current artwork using the College Board rubric before enrollment in the course.
